Iranians in Afghanistan embrace presidential election

Kabul, June 18, IRNA - Iranians in Afghanistan cast their votes on Friday in voting centers provisioned for the 13th presidential election in Iran.

Iran's 13th presidential election began at 8 a.m. on Friday at the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Kabul and the consulates of Herat, Mazar-i-Sharif, Jalalabad, and Kandahar and will be ready to vote by 18:00.

Iranian compatriots living in Afghanistan and Iranian diplomats in Kabul cast their votes for Iran's presidential elections this morning.

Iran’s presidential election is being held nationwide, as well as in 133 countries. 59,310,307 Iranians are eligible to vote, from which 1.3 million are first-voters and 3.5 million are Iranian expatriates, according to statistics from the Ministry of Interior.

Some 500 international journalists from 226 foreign media are covering the event in Iran.

Presidential candidates include Expediency Discernment Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei Mirqaed, Judiciary Chief Ebrahim Raeesi, MP Amir-Hossein Ghazizadeh Hashemi, and former Governor of the Central Bank Abdolnaser Hemmati. Saeed Jalili, Mohsen Mehralizadeh, and Alireza Zakani, three other presidential candidates, dropped out of the presidential race.

The 13th presidential election is held simultaneous with the sixth round of city and village councils elections, the first mid-term for the 11th parliament’s by-election, and the second mid-term for the fifth Assembly of Experts election.
